How it works

Boolean search in recruiting means using logical operators — AND, OR, NOT — to build a precise search query across resumes, a talent pool, or a job board, instead of a single plain-text keyword that returns everything loosely related.

AND narrows a search to results containing all specified terms ("forklift AND certified"), OR broadens it to include any of several equivalent terms ("nurse OR RN OR \"registered nurse\""), and NOT excludes irrelevant matches ("driver NOT \"delivery driver\"" to exclude a different role type). Combined and nested with parentheses, these operators let a search return exactly the candidates who meet real requirements, rather than the much noisier set a single keyword alone would surface.

Worked example

Narrowing a noisy keyword search

A plain search for "forklift" against a large talent pool returns hundreds of resumes, many mentioning forklift experience only in passing or from years ago. A Boolean query — (forklift AND certified) AND (available NOT "day shift only") — narrows that same pool to candidates who are both certified and specifically available for the shift the role actually needs, cutting a 400-result search down to the 30 or so who genuinely match.

In staffing & high-volume hiring

A recruiter searching a large talent pool for, say, a certified forklift operator available for night shifts benefits enormously from a query that can combine required terms, exclude irrelevant ones, and allow synonyms — versus a plain keyword search that either returns too much noise or misses relevant candidates who phrased their experience differently. It's a sourcing skill first, but it only pays off if the underlying candidate database is actually searchable at that level.

Common mistakes

  • Using only AND without OR for synonyms, which misses candidates who phrased the same qualification differently ("RN" versus "registered nurse," for example).
  • Building an overly narrow query that excludes qualified candidates who simply didn't use the exact expected phrasing on their resume or profile.
  • Not testing a query's result count before relying on it — a Boolean search that returns zero or thousands of results usually signals an error in how the terms were combined.
